How play builds motor skills, from reaching to climbing

Gross and fine motor development runs on repetition a child chooses. What play actually contributes, in what order, and where the research is thinner than it sounds.

The short answer

Motor development is driven by volume and variety of self-directed movement rather than by instruction. Play supplies both, because a child repeats a movement far more often when the repetition is the point. The sequence of milestones is broadly predictable; the pace is highly variable and normal ranges are wide.

What motor development actually is

Motor development is the process by which a child gains control of their own body: first the head, then the trunk, then the limbs, then the hands, then the fingers. It runs broadly from the centre outwards and from the top downwards, which is why a baby holds their head steady long before they hold a crayon. Practitioners split it into gross motor skill, meaning whole body movement such as rolling, crawling, walking, running, climbing and jumping, and fine motor skill, meaning the small precise movements of the hands and fingers.

The split is useful for describing what you are watching, but it can mislead. Fine motor control is built on gross motor foundations. A child who cannot hold their shoulder girdle steady cannot make small controlled movements at the end of the arm, because every finger movement is being made from an unstable base. This is why practitioners who work with handwriting difficulties so often start with floor play, climbing and pushing rather than with pencils.

The Early Years Foundation Stage treats physical development as one of its three prime areas, alongside communication and language and personal, social and emotional development. Prime areas are the ones the framework treats as foundational to everything else, which is a policy judgement rather than a research finding, but it reflects a broad reading of the developmental literature.

Why play does this and drilling does not

The mechanism is unglamorous: repetition. Motor learning depends on producing a movement many times, with small variations, and getting feedback each time about what worked. A child learning to climb a low wall will attempt it dozens of times in an afternoon, adjusting grip, foot placement and speed, because the attempt is what they want to do. No adult led session produces that volume of voluntary repetition, because no adult can sustain a child's interest in the same movement for that long.

Variety matters as much as volume. A movement practised on one surface, at one speed, in one direction produces a narrow skill. The same movement practised on grass, gravel, a slope, a wet floor and a wobbly beam produces a skill the child can apply somewhere new. This is why uneven and unpredictable environments do more motor work than flat, uniform ones, and why the phrase varied movement appears so often in physical activity guidance.

The rule worth keeping

If you want to help a child's motor development, change the surface rather than the instruction. New ground produces new movements. A repeated instruction produces one movement, performed for you.

The sequence, and why the timing varies so much

The order of gross motor milestones is stable enough that departure from it is one of the things a health visitor looks at. Head control, rolling, sitting, crawling or bottom shuffling, pulling to stand, cruising, walking, running, jumping with two feet, hopping on one. Fine motor runs from whole hand grasp, through raking, to a pincer grip between thumb and forefinger, to controlled release, to tool use.

The timing is a different matter. Normal ranges are wide, they overlap, and the published ranges are population summaries rather than schedules. A substantial minority of children never crawl in the classic hands and knees pattern, and this alone is not a concern. What generally does warrant a conversation with a health visitor or GP is loss of a skill a child previously had, a strong and persistent asymmetry between the two sides of the body, or a child who is not weight bearing or moving around by the point local guidance flags.

Roughly 0 to 12 months

Floor time, reaching, rolling, sitting, getting into and out of positions without help.

Roughly 1 to 3 years

Walking on varied ground, carrying and dragging heavy things, climbing, early throwing.

Roughly 3 to 5 years

Running with changes of direction, jumping, pedalling, balance on one foot, scissors and mark making.

Roughly 5 to 8 years

Combining skills under pressure, catching a moving ball, riding without stabilisers, fluent handwriting.

Age bands describe a rough sequence, not a schedule. Wide variation within each band is normal and expected.

How much movement, according to whom

The UK Chief Medical Officers' physical activity guidelines are the reference point in Britain. For infants who are not yet walking, they advise at least 30 minutes of tummy time spread across the day, along with other floor based movement. For under fives who can walk unaided, they advise at least 180 minutes of activity of any intensity spread across the day. For children and young people aged 5 to 18, they advise an average of at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity a day across the week, plus activities that strengthen muscle and bone on three days.

The World Health Organization's guidelines for children under 5 give broadly the same figure for one to four year olds. Note what these numbers are and are not. They are consensus recommendations built from a body of observational evidence and a smaller body of trials. They are not a threshold below which harm occurs, and they do not specify what the movement should be. Nothing in them requires a class, a coach or a piece of equipment.

Fine motor skill and the pencil problem

Adults tend to notice fine motor skill only when handwriting appears, which is late. By then the underlying work has been done or has not. The components are shoulder and trunk stability, an established hand preference, the ability to isolate the index finger and thumb from the other three fingers, wrist extension, and enough hand strength to sustain a grip.

Play that builds these is mostly not table work. It is hanging and climbing, which loads the shoulder girdle. It is pulling, squeezing, tearing and pinching, which build hand strength. It is picking small things up and posting them into small holes, which builds the pincer grip. Playing with dough, sand, water, pegs, string, buttons and tape does more for a four year old's future handwriting than a worksheet, and it is the reason early years settings look the way they do.

One caution worth stating clearly. Handwriting difficulty in a school aged child has several possible causes and is not always a motor problem. If it persists and is causing distress, the route is the school's special educational needs coordinator and, where indicated, an occupational therapy referral, not a programme bought online.

Where the evidence is genuinely thin

Three claims circulate widely and are not well supported. The first is that crawling is necessary for later reading, usually justified by an appeal to brain hemispheres. There is no good evidence for this, and plenty of typically developing children skip crawling. The second is that a specific commercial movement programme produces gains that ordinary varied play does not. Trials of such programmes are usually small, short, unblinded and run by people with an interest in the result. The third is that early formal instruction in a sport improves long term motor competence more than broad varied play. Early specialisation is, if anything, viewed with more caution now than it was.

What is reasonably well supported is duller: children who move more, in more varied ways, develop broader motor competence, and motor competence is associated with continued participation in physical activity later. Association is not the same as proof of cause, and this literature is largely observational. The Education Endowment Foundation's early years toolkit is a reasonable place to see how thin some of the early years evidence base is once it is assessed properly.

What this does not cover

This article does not assess or diagnose anything. Motor difficulties have many causes, including some that need medical attention, and no article can distinguish between them. If a child loses a skill they had, moves markedly more on one side than the other, or is not meeting the milestones your health visitor has discussed with you, the route is your health visitor, GP or, in England, the local early help service.

Common questions

How much physical activity does a toddler need each day?

The UK Chief Medical Officers advise at least 180 minutes a day for under fives who can walk unaided, spread across the whole day and at any intensity. That total includes ordinary walking, playing and moving about. It is not a target to be met in a single session and it does not require any equipment or class.

Does skipping crawling cause problems later?

There is no good evidence that it does. A substantial minority of children move straight from sitting to bottom shuffling or to pulling up and walking. The claim that crawling is necessary for reading is not supported. What matters more is whether a child is finding varied ways to move around and explore independently.

Do baby walkers help a child walk sooner?

No. Guidance in the UK and elsewhere discourages sit-in baby walkers, which are associated with injury and do not speed up independent walking. Floor time, chances to pull up on stable furniture and space to cruise are what the developmental sequence actually uses.

Should fine motor skill be practised at a table?

Mostly not, in the early years. Fine motor control rests on shoulder and trunk stability, so climbing, hanging, pushing and pulling contribute more than table work at three or four. Dough, sand, water, pegs and posting games build grip strength and the pincer grip in a form a child will keep repeating.

Is a movement class worth it for a preschooler?

It may be enjoyable and social, and that is a reasonable justification on its own. What the evidence does not support is a claim that a class accelerates motor development beyond what varied free movement provides. Treat any such claim as marketing until the trial behind it is published and independent.

When should I raise a concern about movement?

Speak to your health visitor or GP if a child loses a skill they previously had, if there is a persistent and marked difference between the two sides of the body, if a child seems unusually stiff or unusually floppy, or if they are not meeting milestones your health visitor has discussed. Concern is best raised early and is not a diagnosis.
